Ayr Peewee AE Flames Regular Season Week 3
This weekend, the Flames continued with the third week of their season hoping to take over first place in the overall standings

The first game took place on Thursday night in Paris.  Before Thursday, Paris had not lost a game.  Nate Sherk would start in goal this game.  In the first period, the Flames took to a strong start with lots of puck possession in the offensive zone.  Then, at 4:32, Liam Hansen took a shot from the faceoff dot in the offensive zone.  The shot moved like a knuckleball, and the Paris goalie couldn’t handle the rebound.  Josh Loughrin came into the crease and put the rebound away, putting the Flames up 1-0.  The Flames continued to play with a fast pace, but with 45 seconds left in the period, the Wolfpack capitalized off a bad bounce to tie the score at 1.  In the second period, the Flames turned up the heat, and Liam Hansen scored five-hole assisted by Josh Loughrin, which made the score 2-1.  Ayr was playing a fairly good game offensively, and was doing so-and-so with the breakouts in their own end, but goaltender Nate Sherk was all over the puck, making stop after stop for the Flames.  In the third period, urgency levels flared on both sides, and penalties were taken.  The penalty kills of both squads were successful, and then came the dying minutes.  The Wolfpack were desperate for an equalizer, and they started to tilt the ice.  The Flames were acting like the whole last 5 minutes was a penalty kill, until they took a penalty for real.  Paris pulled their goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage, but Nate Sherk proved to be a key asset for Ayr, making many saves including a sliding toe-save in the final minute.  The Flames held on for their third straight win, and doing so held the lead in the standings.

On Saturday evening, the Flames hosted the Caledonia Thunder for a game staged to be a ‘fight for first place.’  Before Saturday, the Thunder were undefeated.  Nate Sherk would start in goal for this game.  In the first period, the Thunder came out with a rumble and scored 49 seconds into the game.  The Flames were struggling to clear their zone in the first period.  In the second period, the Flames’ woes continued and the Thunder scored two more goals.  In the third, with Ayr down 3-0, some might think they would give up, but give up they didn’t.  Jesse Janzen scored an unassisted breakaway goal at 13:56 to make the score 3-1.  But the Thunder answered very quickly to make the score 4-1.  At 6:22, Jesse Janzen scored another goal on a similar-looking breakaway assisted by Scott Hall and Caleb Garchinski.  The score was 4-2.  With time winding down, Ayr drew a penalty before pulling Nate Sherk for an extra attacker.  Ayr capitalized on the effort and pulled within one goal at 1:02.  The goal was scored by Josh Loughrin and was assisted by Scott Hall.  Ayr could not score again, and lost to the Thunder 4-3, settling for second place in the standings.

On Sunday, Ayr travelled to Cayuga for their final game of the week.  Nate Sherk would start in goal this game.  In the first period, Cayuga got off to a strong start and scored 4 minutes in.  The Flames played hard, and were doing much better with breakouts this game.  In the second period, Ayr stuck with the same game plan despite the 1-goal deficit, and played just as hard as they did in the first.  Then at 1:52, Tyson Kaufman scored assisted by Camden McLeod  to tie the score.  But Cayuga answered quickly to make the score 2-1.  In the third period, The Flames continued to bring the heat, but the Stars scored to make it 3-1.  Cayuga then took a penalty in an attempt to stop Liam Hansen from scoring.  On the power play, Jesse Janzen scored assisted by Tyson Kaufman to cut the lead to one.  Ayr made a great effort to tie the score, but could not and thus lost 3-2 to even Ayr’s record at 3-3-1.  Great job boys!
