First Playoff Game and Lambton Shores Tournament Winner!
The past two weeks have been busy for the Ayr Flames Novice LL1 team.  First, playdown game against Beverly.  Jackson Wright opened up the scoring in the first period, assisted by Sullivan Cofell and Will McLeod.  Wright potted his second goal during the second period, unassisted.  Egan McDonald followed up quickly with his first goal of the game, assisted by Darko Maldini.  McDonald finished off the scoring with his second goal of the game.  It wasn't enough as Beverly scored 5, but they plan to beat them when they see them again during round 2.

Next, the team travelled to the Lambton Shores Minor Hockey Novice LL tournament and came away CHAMPIONS!

First up, a 4-0 win against Lambton Shores Red!  McDonald opened up the scoring in the second period, followed quickly by another goal from Wright.  Centerman Hayden Covemaeker potted his first goal of the tournament with 34 seconds left in the 2nd period.  Brody Macaulay was on fire with his defensive poke checks, saving goalie J.S. Deacon from sure breakaways!  Cofell sealed the deal late in the third period when his shot saw the back of the net, assisted by Covemaeker.  Deacon was on fire, adding another shut out to his impressive list.  Deacon went on to win Goalie of the Tournament at the skill competition, after a controversial shut out competition.

Next, a 4-1 win against Strathroy Blue.  Wright opened up the scoring in the first period followed by another goal from McDonald in the second, assisted by Benson Dietrich.  Grady Brown, the team pump up captain, was all over the defensive zone to poke check or simply clear the puck.  Covemaeker scored the third goal after a mess in front of their net and he fought to tip it in, and Wright sealed the deal early in the third period with the last goal of the game.

After a long 8 hour wait between games and a very accommodating Oakridge Resort in Grand Bend, providing the boys with a large room to hang and watch movies, the boys took to the ice for the championship game against Mount Brydges White.   Defensemen McLeod was moved to forward, a position he plays well.  Fought for that puck everytime, and usually won.  Mount Brydges opened up the scoring in the first period, to the dismay of the team. The boys fought back and Dietrich scored his first goal of the tournament, assisted by Darko Maldini and McDonald. No goals were scored in the second period but forward Cohen Dalton was on fire at the wing position, skating hard and moving the puck.  Wright put the pressure up a notch with a goal early in the 3rd period, assisted by Danik Godard.  McDonald added steam to the pressure when his goal saw the back of the net, unassisted.  Mount Brydges fought back, scoring two quick goals.  Carter Cressman seemed to be everywhere, defending the goalie, rushing the net and keeping a close eye on all forwards.  Derick Groot was stellar on defence, keeping the puck in the offensive zone and protecting Deacon with all he had.  With a 3-3 tie in sight, the boys hunkered down determined to get the job done.   That simply amazing winning goal came with 52 seconds left in the 3rd period by center man Cofell, assisted by McDonald.  The crowd went nuts!

Congrats boys on your tournament win.  We couldn't have won this tourney without the best goalie at the tournament on our side.  Deacon, thanks for taking all those shots and blocking all but 4!  Way to go!
